Operating Instructions for Flow Injection Hydride Generator Model HG-A
The present Hydride Generator is the fruit of famous specialists in spectroscopic analysis in our country after many years of research, with unique technology and superior performance, it belongs to the Hydride Generator of advanced level both domestically and internationally, covering more than 90% of the domestic market, and is solely manufactured by our company.
1.1 Profile of Applications
The present Hydride Generator belongs to Flow Injection Model, necessary to be applied together with spectrometer (the host of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer) , to determine the trace amount of As, Se, Sb, Pb, Tin, Te, Ge, with Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry and detect Hg with Cold Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. ( And there is other materials asserting that Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry could also detect Cd and other elements, whose method in details shall be solved by clients, for whom our company could offer help in searching).
1.2 Working Conditions
Press the activate key, the machine inhales automatically and quantitatively the 2 solutions (i.e. potassium borohydride and test sample) and the test sample and potassium borohydride solutions begins to flow steadily and reacts after meeting together, whose product is carried into the gas and liquid separate pipe along with the carrier gas, the mixture gas of which(Hydride Gas) enters the Electro-thermal Atomizer of quartz absorption tube, and the waste liquid is discharged automatically, and the host of atomic absorption is read by peak height method (or peak area).
1.3. The Superior Characteristics of the Present Series of Generators
(1) Automatic Liquid Inlet, liquid measurement system (quantitative feed),flow stabilizer (replacing peristaltic pump),program timer,etc all utilize superior grade automatic system,delicate in devices,whose performance is better than pneumatization system. Superior Quality Electric Automatic Elements are applied to realize the automatic system.
(2) High degree of automation: Use only one activate key, with only one soft press, the entire processes of sample injection, generation, determination and cleaning shall be completed.
(3) Unique Electro-thermal Quartz Absorption Tube (Atomizer): Compact in Size of the device, with fast speed in heating, and ease in installation, as well as stability in temperature, with which the service life is 10 times longer than flame heating, and free of fuel consumption, with power off the quartz tube shall be cooled down, after which the analyzing method shall be changed quickly.
(4) The analyzing performance ( Sensitivity, detection limit, stability, working efficiency) is superior: Sensitivity: for most detectable hydride-forming elements it is 1ng/ml/1% , e.g. it is better than 0.15 ng/ml/1% for As, about 0.1ppm in solid test sample, with Relative Standard Deviation (RSD) : Plant Control Index is lower than 3%; for single determination period, it lasts 23 seconds.
(5) High Adaptability: It could be applied for all types of the atomic absorption hosts both old and new, in both home and abroad, which makes it easy for installation.

(9) Using small amount of solution, with 2.8-3.0ml sample solution (including cleaning); and 2.8-3.0ml potassium borohydride solution, without the necessity to prepare other solutions.
2.Unpacking Acceptance
2.1. After unpacking, please check the components according to the packing list, and there is differences for different models, in case there are components missing or damaged, please contact the manufacturer.
3. Installation and trial run for Instruments and application conditions
3.1 The Generator shall be installed on the left or right side of the combustor of the host to avoid the heat radiation of the combustor.
3.2 When in application and storage, the Generator shall not be placed with an inclination of over 120°.
3.3 The preparation of atomic absorption spectrophotometer (host)before test.
(1) Start up the machine conventionally according to the operating manual by the manufacturer of atomic absorption spectrophotometer.
(2) The light source shall install the corresponding hollow cathode lamp according to the elements to be tested, and adjust the wavelength and energy. (It is optimal to apply hollow cathode lamp with high performance, sold by our company, which could increase the intensity and improve the sensitivity, stability, as well as reduce the interference of neighboring spectral lines.
(3) Spectral band width Ordinary Lamps apply the band width of 0.2 or 0.4nm, while the band width of Lamp with high performance could be increased to 1 to 2nm (still high in sensitivity, however with much improvement in intensity).
(4) The Programming of read modes (please refer to the operating manual of the host of atomic absorption spectrophotometer):
a. Peak Height Method: After pressing the activate key, the test sample and potassium borohydride are inhaled into the Generator, at this moment the green light of activate key is on, and it begins to read, the programmed integral time is 15 to 20 seconds, read the maximum value of absorption peak either with eyes or with chart recorder.
b. Area Method: Programmed delay time for reading is 1-3 seconds, for integral time it is 5-8 seconds, after pressing the activate key for 4 seconds, the “Read” Key begins to delay reading, and 5 seconds after the completion of reading, the next operation could be carried out.
C Continuous method: Program the integral time to be 0.5 second, and the continuous reading times to be 30 times, 4 seconds after pressing the activate key, reading is initiated, after completion, the maximum values are measured for 30 times.
(5) The adjustment of Zero Point: The hosts with peak height reading method, can usually adjust automatically to Zero instantly after pressing the “Read” Key and then begin to read, in case that they could not adjust to Zero automatically,it could be fulfilled by pressing the “Read” Key 4 seconds after pressing the activate key (the time for adjusting to zero shall be less than 2 seconds) , in case that there is no function of automatic zero adjustment or the time for zero adjustment is longer than 3 seconds, it is only possible to adjust to zero manually, which could be achieved by pressing the zero adjustment key 3 seconds after pressing the activate key. It is optimal to adjust to Zero before each test.
3.4 Installation and trial run of Electro-thermal Quartz Absorption Tube:
(1) The position adjustment of Electro-thermal Quartz Absorption Tube: Before the installation of absorption tube, adjust the position of hollow cathode lamp to the optimal transmissivity, to reach the full energy span, insert the film threading into the burning slot, and then adjust the up and down as well as front and rear and angle of the combustor, enable the most energy passing through the absorption tube, and then adjust the energy to full span of T100%, or reach the application requirement of the instrument sold by the manufacturer of the host of atomic absorption, at this moment, the Negative High Voltage shall not be over 500v, or the stability of the instrument shall be very poor.
(2) After the energizing of Quartz Tube and opening of Nitrogen Gas, the Lamp Power of the host of atomic absorption shall all be changed, and before all the preparation work is completed, there shall be check on the adjustment of Lamp Power and negative high voltage to make it reach the requirement of working conditions of the instrument.
(3) The adjustment of the temperature of Quartz Absorption Tube: The temperature of Electro-thermal Quartz Absorption Tube shall be controlled through the changes of voltage of power supply, and the atomization temperature of most hydride-forming elements are about 800 to 900 °C (emitting orange-red light). Quartz atomizer power supply shall be connected to heating output, and the central tube of Quartz Atomizer with a diameter of 6mm, shall be connected to the hydride delivery outlet hose. After the completion of all the preparation work, switch on the power supply of 220v, and adjust the voltage to between 90 and 110v. After 2 minutes, the heater strip shall be orange-red in color (900°C). The same Absorption Tube shall be applied in the testing of Hg, however without the necessity for electrical heating.
3.5 Connect the mating steel cylinder pressure reducer supplied by our company to the anterior nitrogen (or Argon) gas steel container, and the output gas tube is connected to the no( ) tube on the back of the Generator, and then open the gas source, confirm the output pressure to be 0.22Mpa, (not fixed when delivered), lightly open the master switch of the steel cylinder, and then open the output switch (Blue). When cease the operation, it shall be handled according to the operating manual of the decompressor.
(1) The adjustment of carrier gas flow rate: Adjust the flow rate by turning the knob under the flow meter to the corresponding flow rate for the elements to be tested.
(2) The lower port of waste liquid pipe shall be under the water level, unnecessary for the installation of hydroseal, and necessary to keep the pipeline unobstructed.
(3) Application Temperature: The lowest room temperature shall be over 15°C, the sensitivity is higher when the room temperature is high, and lower when the room temperature is low.
(4) Please refer to colour graph ( ) and the operating manual for the installation of the present Generator.
Attentions:
1. During the process of determination, attentions shall be paid to the valence state of all the hydride-forming elements, and there shall be no sensitivity or very low in sensitivity when the valence state is inconsistent, and there is introduction for the reduction of valence state in the formulation of analyzing methods in the manual.
2. During the process of determination for all the hydride-forming elements, acidity is very important, inconsistency in acidity shall inflict great impact on the sensitivity and stability, acidity for all the elements in detail shall be introduced in the formulation of analyzing methods in the later part of the manual, or relevant literatures shall be referred to.
